The 2007 St John Canoe race

Fort Kent used to have a canoe race on the Fish River which ran for a number of years. Unfortunately it was discontinued in1996. The chamber of commerce decided to revive the tradition this year with a series of events we called Riverfest 2007. There were three races: the anything that floats fun run, a 14 mile traditional canoe and kayak race and a 10 mile race for motorized canoes. Riverfest also included a barbecue at the finsh line, exhibits by the Department of Fish and Game and a travelling musuem featuring the Ways of the Woods. Forty five canoes and kayaks competed and an estimated 500 spectators were on hand at the park. By the looks of all the smiling faces a good time was had by all.
